HVAC Refrigeration Theory Class :

Designed for licensed technicians preparing for the Refrgeration Contractor License (Masters Equivalent).  Program will post on advanced theory, SHRAE standards and the Mass Refrigeration Code.

Core Curriculum Outline
  • Fundamentals of Refrigeration & Thermodynamics
    • Heat transfer methods (conduction, convection, radiation).
    • Pressure-temperature relationships (charts). 
    • States of matter and phase changes (evaporation, condensation).
    • Calculating heat load and heat content.
  • The Vapor Compression Cycle
    • Detailed operation of the four main components: Compressor, Condenser, Metering Device, Evaporator.
    • Understanding high and low-pressure sides of the system.
    • Refrigerant states: Superheat and subcooling.
    • Refrigerant piping and piping techniques.
  • Components and Accessories
    • Compressor types (reciprocating, scroll, rotary).
    • Condenser and evaporator design and efficiency.
    • Metering devices (TEV, capillary tube).
    • System accessories (filter driers, accumulators, sight glasses).
  • Refrigerants and Safety
    • EPA Section 608 regulations and certification preparation.
    • Refrigerant types, handling, recovery, recycling, and reclaiming.
    • Safety protocols for pressurized systems and electrical systems.
  • System Diagnostics and Troubleshooting
    • Interpreting temperature and pressure readings to determine system performance.
    • Identifying airflow issues, restrictions, and improper charging.
    • Electrical troubleshooting (relays, controls, motors).
  • Advanced Applications
    • High, medium, and low-temperature applications.
    • Advanced refrigeration cycle analysis using Pressure/Enthalpy 

Approved school by the MA Board of State Examiners of Plumbers and Gas Fitters.
