Description

Blood Film Evaluation for the Veterinary Technician – 2 CEU*

A Complete Blood Count (CBC) requires microscopic evaluation of a blood film by a properly trained member of the veterinary care team.  Creating diagnostic blood slides can sometimes be frustrating, but with a few tips – along with some practice – you can quickly become an expert.  This two-hour lab will begin with proper sampling handling, slide prep, and use of the microscope. We will focus much of our time recognizing normal and abnormal morphology of erythrocytes, leukocytes and platelets.  We will also discuss methods for estimation and differentiation of each of these blood components. We will be using canine and feline blood samples to walk through this process step by step.

Urinalysis for the Veterinary Technician – 2 CEU*

Performing a complete urinalysis is an essential task of a veterinary technician and consists of four main parts: gross examination of the urine, the reagent test strip, the specific gravity and microscopic examination of the urine sediment.  This 2-hour wet lab will begin with proper sample procurement and handling and then spend the majority of the time on the four components of analysis. We will use feline and canine samples for microscopic evaluation with a focus on differentiating structures commonly found in urine.*
